POSITION DESCRIPTION PROPOSAL

STERRY MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

YOUTH MINISTRY DIRECTOR

Why is this position important?  We care about the Christian development of children and youth and realize that the right Christian leadership can make a big difference in strengthening, helping and encouraging children and youth (and their families) to be followers of Jesus Christ.

Purpose and Requirements:  To employ, on a part-time basis, a dedicated Christian person, who will work side-by-side with lay leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of positive, Christ-centered, youth programs for children and youth.

The Youth Ministry Director (YMD) must sincerely love God, believe the Bible is God’s Word, be of moral-integrity, be teachable, be sensitive, have leadership abilities, be a team-player, be flexible, be self-motivated, and be gifted at relating to people of all ages, especially children and youth.  The person should be in good physical condition and be emotionally and spiritually mature.  Prior experience working with children and youth would be helpful.  A valid driver’s license is necessary.  Computer competency would be useful (although this is not a clerical position).

Accountability:  The YMD will regularly meet with the Pastor for prayer, encouragement, evaluation, and planning, and be under the supervision of the Pastor.

Responsibilities:

  1. To participate in providing leadership to help sustain, strengthen, develop and expand the youth programs of our congregation.  This would include, but not be limited to, youth group meetings, special youth activities, participation in God’s Gang, participation in Vacation Bible School and Summer Camps.
  2. To publicize and promote youth events.
  3. To be an advocate to the congregation and community regarding the needs of youth.
  4. To articulate and model personal faith in Christ to children and youth, which includes being present at Sunday worship services and other all-church activities, unless out of town or involved in ministries/activities designed specifically for teenagers.

Time Requirement:  This position is a part-time (~ 25-30 hours/week), salaried position, with at least one day off per week.

Benefits:  1) a salary of $ 1,500 per month, and;  2)  Workman’s compensation.

Evaluation:  A performance review will be conducted under the guidance of the Pastor.

Training:  The YMD can depend on the congregation and church staff to provide training and encouragement in a loving, supportive, Christian atmosphere.  As a result, we hope to see the YMD mature in his/her commitment to Jesus Christ and the body of Christ, and to develop his/her spiritual gifts and skills as a Christian leader.
